Honorable Mentions

So far I’ve covered the top 8 podcast production companies. But there are SO many more.

Here are a few more agencies that I think deserve a shoutout.

Did I miss one? Contact us to suggest what we should add!

What does a production company do?

Anything and everything! Most of the agencies in this blog listed above offer “full-service” or all-in-one services, meaning they literally will do everything from writing a script and creating the concept for your podcast to recording, editing, publishing, posting about it on social media, and more.

There are seven phases of work that podcast production companies typically help with. The names may differ, but the underlying work and deliverables are the same.

These areas of service are:

  1. Strategy: Concepting, branding, goal, target audience, content calendar, etc
  2. Launch: Visual brand, hosting and distribution, technical details
  3. Pre-production: script writing, guest booking and prep, equipment recommendations
  4. Production: Recording, on-call research, feedback, and coaching
  5. Post-production: Audio and video editing, mixing, mastering
  6. Marketing: Creating assets like show notes and transcripts, scheduling, replying, reporting on analytics
  7. Podcast advertising: Making ad creative, buying and selling ads

Why hire a production company?

As I mentioned in the introduction, there are only three ways to podcast: Do it yourself, outsource it, or automate it. Here are a few reasons why you should consider outsourcing.

1. Create higher-quality content

Perhaps the most obvious reason to hire a podcast agency is to uplevel your quality. With the right team, you can refine your story, improve as a host, and bring your audio/video to life with sound design, music, transitions, and animation. On top of that, they can help you grow your audience with marketing and promotion post-launch.

2. Buy back your time

Time is a non-renewing resource. It might be the most precious resource we have. It typically takes a skilled professional 2-3x the length of an episode to edit. That means a 30-minute show takes 90 minutes of work, and that’s only editing the audio. If you factor in video editing, copywriting for titles and show notes, and publishing content it could easily be more like 3 hours.  Outsourcing your work can buy back dozens of hours of your time.

3. Access years of professional expertise

Podcast agencies give you access to years of specialized expertise instantly. You should learn tactical information from the trenches without having to go and do the work yourself. A great production company, in my opinion, should educate you on how to be a better host, a better marketer, etc. You’ll not only walk away with a great show, but more knowledge.

4. Expand your network

Working with an agency can be a great way to expand your network. Not only will you meet the team, but you can ask for intros to their clients or industry partners. It’s not guaranteed that they will introduce you, but the chances are very high that they’ll try to help out!

There are many more reasons to hire a podcast company. That said, it’s not for everyone. If you think you want to hire an agency, how do you decide which one to choose? Let’s talk about that next.

What should you look for in a production company?

As you can see, there are a LOT of production companies to choose from. It’s a bit overwhelming, right? So how do you choose one? The honest answer is… it depends. But here are a few things that are always good to consider:

Considerations like the speed and price are very obvious. But I hope my emphasis on networking and education sparks some novel thoughts.

Recap
